MISSOULA — The primary election for Montana’s First Congressional District in 2024 is scheduled for June 4.
This district, established in 2023, covers 16 counties in western Montana.
Prior to the election, MTN’s Kathryn Roley conducted interviews with the Democratic and Republican candidates, discussing their perspectives on housing, the drug crisis, inflation, and abortion rights.
One of the candidates interviewed was incumbent Rep. Ryan Zinke. Zinke, a Republican, previously served in the Montana Senate from 2009 to 2013, in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017, and as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior under President Donald Trump from 2017 to 2019.
Below are highlights from the interview:
Kathryn: Why did you decide to run for reelection amidst familiar opponents?
Zinke: Our nation is facing challenges, especially with the current administration going in the wrong direction. I believe it is my duty to represent Montana and ensure our voices are heard.
Kathryn: How do you approach the topic of reproductive rights?
Zinke: I support the ruling of Roe v. Wade and believe states should have a say. In Montana, the legislation allows up to 20 weeks with exceptions, which I find appropriate. Access to birth control is also crucial.
Kathryn: What is your plan to address the rise in fentanyl-related deaths and drug trafficking?
Zinke: Securing the border is crucial to combat drug trafficking and related crimes. We need to deal with the root causes and ensure no safe havens for criminals, including those involved in drug and sex trafficking.
Kathryn: How will you support veterans at the federal level?
Zinke: As a veteran myself, I understand the need for reorganizing the VA to better meet the diverse needs of our veteran population. Access, flexibility, and reducing bureaucracy are key priorities.
