Highway officials have postponed the Memorial Day weekend opening of the Beartooth Highway, U.S. 212, due to heavy snowfall and dangerous winter conditions.
The reopening of the Beartooth Highway, situated east of Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance between Red Lodge and Cooke City, has been delayed until further notice after a recent storm brought fresh snow to the area on Thursday.
The highway was originally set to reopen on Friday, May 24th, but will now remain closed over the holiday weekend due to winter conditions, significant snowfall, and hazardous driving conditions, as reported by state highway officials.
As of Thursday night, a winter storm warning was still in effect for the region, with a forecast of 1 to 2 feet of heavy snowfall and winds reaching up to 35 mph.
With the pass’s high elevation, temporary travel restrictions or closures can be implemented at any time without prior notice. Motorists are advised to have flexible travel plans and be vigilant for swiftly changing weather conditions.
