Two-time PGA Tour champion Grayson Murray passed away on Saturday morning, as confirmed by a statement from the tournament. Murray was 30 years old.
No cause of death has been disclosed at this time. He had withdrawn from the Charles Schwab Challenge on Friday due to an illness.
The PGA Tour commissioner, Jay Monahan, expressed his devastation, stating, “We were devastated to learn, and are heartbroken to share, that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words.”
Monahan mentioned, “I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play.” He added, “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
Grief counselors will be available for those in need, as announced by tournament leadership.
The 30-year-old golfer achieved three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships and became the top-ranked player in his age group. At the age of 16, Murray made the first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour and became the second-youngest player to win.
Following his success in various universities, Murray gained recognition in 2016 when he received a sponsor’s exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour near his hometown in Raleigh, North Carolina. He later secured full status on the PGA Tour for the 2016-2017 season.
Various reports and social media posts highlighted the emotional moment when CBS’s Jim Nantz announced the sudden passing of the 58th-ranked golfer in the world.
