The Democratic National Convention intends to officially nominate Joe Biden as its candidate for president through a virtual roll call before the in-person convention in August.
This early decision is to ensure that President Biden is included on Ohio’s ballot for the general election before the state’s Aug. 7 deadline.
The process will mirror the 2020 nomination, conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will follow the traditional state-by-state vote format of the nominating convention.

The DNC will need to vote on June 4 to amend its bylaws for the early nomination to proceed.
“Joe Biden will be on the ballot in Ohio and all 50 states, and Ohio Republicans agree,” stated DNC chair Jaime Harrison. “But when action is needed, they have repeatedly failed to act. Therefore, Democrats will take charge. Through a virtual roll call, we will prevent Republicans from undermining our democracy through incompetence or partisan tactics, allowing Ohioans to vote for their chosen presidential candidate.”
Ohio law mandates that presidential candidates be certified 90 days before the general election, the earliest deadline among states.
Ohio has adjusted its general election ballot deadline twice before, in 2012 and 2020.
State legislators convened a special session on Tuesday to resolve this year’s deadline conflict. Previous legislation stalled when Republicans added a provision prohibiting foreign nationals from contributing to Ohio ballot campaigns.
