T-Mobile is acquiring U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations and certain spectrum assets in a transaction worth $4.4 billion, marking a significant consolidation in the industry.
As part of the deal, T-Mobile will gain over 4 million new customers, take control of U.S. Cellular’s wireless operations, and secure around 30% of spectrum assets across various spectrum bands. Additionally, T-Mobile will establish a new master license agreement for over 2,000 towers and extend the lease term for approximately 600 towers where T-Mobile is already a tenant.
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert expressed confidence that the agreement will result in “a better experience for all of our customers with more coverage and capacity.”
T-Mobile is known for its active involvement in mergers and acquisitions within the telecommunications sector. In 2020, T-Mobile successfully finalized the acquisition of its smaller competitor Sprint. Furthermore, in 2013, the Federal Communications Commission approved its merger with MetroPCS Communications Inc.
