Corrie and Paul Loeffler have been integral parts of Bee Week for nearly two decades. Paul serves as the Bee’s TV analyst, a role he has held since 2006, while Corrie is the executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
As the executive director, Corrie dedicates her time to the Bee year-round. Outside of Bee Week, Paul works as a sports announcer and hosts a syndicated radio show highlighting World War II veterans.
Both siblings are former spellers themselves. Paul participated once, while Corrie competed three times and came close to winning. This year marks Corrie’s 30th year being part of the national finals in various roles.
They credit their mom for supporting their spelling journeys that began in Central California during their childhood. Their mom encouraged them to dream big and was patient throughout their spelling studies.
Although the siblings admit that spelling words have become more challenging over the years, they appreciate the dedication and preparation of the current spellers.
For Corrie, the highlight of Bee Week comes at the end, when the kids celebrate at the Bee Week Bash. She is always moved when they sing “We are the Champions” after a winner has been crowned. For Paul, connecting with the spellers and their families off-camera is the most rewarding part of the week.
Despite their busy schedules during Bee Week, Corrie and Paul find time to catch up and maintain a bit of sibling rivalry. Paul jokingly acknowledges that Corrie would likely beat him in a competition now.
