After a heavy snowfall last week that delayed plowing efforts, the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge to Cooke City is set to open for vehicles on Saturday, June 1.
However, the opening is dependent on weather conditions permitting safe travel along the mountain route.
Crews are still working to clear snow up to 6 feet deep along the highway. The Montana side is currently accessible up to Vista Point.
The highway was initially planned to open on May 24 but remained closed due to a major storm bringing winter weather, heavy snowfall, and dangerous driving conditions.
Once the highway reopens, there may be temporary travel restrictions or closures at any time without prior notice. It is advisable to have flexible travel plans and be alert to rapidly changing weather conditions if you intend to use this route.
Prior to your journey, make sure to check for the latest road status and updates on the websites of the Montana and Wyoming departments of transportation.
