A Minneapolis community is grieving the loss of a police officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty.
Authorities stated that two officers responded to a report of a double shooting on Thursday. They were met with gunfire immediately and returned fire.
Both officers were injured, and Officer Jamal Mitchell, aged 36, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
“Jamal died while fulfilling the responsibilities society expects of all police officers. He was dedicated to his job and remained loyal to his oath until the very end. There is no greater service one can offer,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.

Authorities shared that the suspect was killed and two additional gunshot victims were discovered during the investigation. One of them passed away, while the other was in critical condition.
“Please bear with us as we’re still gathering all the details,” stated Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. “We are committed to completing a thorough investigation.”
Mitchell had joined the force in 2022. O’Hara remembered him as a hero who was a father, son, and fiancé.
“He had a deep passion for his work, cherished his role in the MPD, and upheld his oath to the end,” O’Hara expressed.
