Due to heavy snowfall last week causing plowing delays, the Beartooth Highway from Red Lodge to Cooke City is set to open for vehicles on Saturday, June 1.
The opening, however, is subject to weather conditions permitting safe travel along the mountainous route.
Crews are currently working to clear snowbanks as deep as 6 feet along the highway, with the Montana side currently accessible up to Vista Point.
The initial opening date was May 24, but adverse winter weather conditions, heavy snowfall, and dangerous driving conditions led to the continued closure of the highway.
Once the highway reopens, there may be temporary travel restrictions or closures imposed without prior notice. It is advisable to maintain flexible travel plans and be vigilant of rapidly changing weather conditions if using this route.
