COLUMBIA FALLS — Malaki Simpson has been a standout track star for the Columbia Falls Wildcats over the past four years. As he wraps up his high school career, he has solidified his place in the record books for various events at the state level.
“It meant everything,” Simpson said. “I worked tirelessly for this moment, and to come back this year and secure the victory feels like a well-earned accomplishment.”
Last week in Laurel, Simpson set a new Class A record for the 200-meter race with a time of 21.67 seconds and equaled the Class A record for the 100-meter race with a time of 10.74 seconds. These records have stood since 2003, held by Havre’s Steve Heberly.
Following these achievements, Simpson will be transitioning from his Wildcat blue to Grizzly maroon and silver as he continues his track career at the University of Montana.
“It’s a great feeling, like I’ve achieved a goal that I’ve been working towards since freshman year,” Simpson expressed. “I can now relax and prepare for college.”
Reflecting on what set this year apart from previous years, Simpson attributes his success to his unwavering determination.
“Overall, I just had a stronger desire to win this year,” Simpson explained. “I felt the responsibility to succeed weighing on me, which motivated me to push harder.”
Simpson acknowledges the vital role the Columbia Falls community played in his journey and success.
“The support from the community has been everything to me. Even when I doubted myself, they stood by me and motivated me to become a better athlete and individual,” a thankful Simpson shared.
With his remarkable high school career now concluded on a high note, Simpson aims to continue this success as a Grizzly athlete in Montana.
