“The Garfield Movie” was the top winner at the North American box office in its second week, leaving “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ in third place, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
During the Memorial Day weekend, “Garfield” and “Furiosa” battled for the lead, with the “Mad Max” prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy coming out on top.
This week, Sony’s animated remake featuring Chris Pratt as the lasagna-loving cat was expected to lead with $14 million in ticket sales, as reported by Exhibitor Relations.
In second place was Paramount’s animated “If,” starring Cailey Fleming and Ryan Reynolds, with $10.8 million, just ahead of Warner Bros’ “Furiosa” at $10.75 million.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” took fourth place with $8.8 million, and Universal’s “The Fall Guy” with $4.2 million landed in fifth place.
The May domestic box office was down by 43.3 percent compared to the average from 2017-2019, according to industry analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.
The top 10 rankings also included “The Strangers: Chapter 1,” “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,” “In a Violent Nature,” “Ezra,” and “Summer Camp.”
