Lonnie Johnson, the president and founder of Johnson Research and Development Co. — most famously known as the creator of the iconic Super Soaker water gun — believes in the power of perseverance when it comes to bringing ideas to life.
The inventive engineer has a long history of working on his ideas and turning them into reality, resulting in over 100 patents to his name.
While working as an aerospace engineer at NASA, Johnson dedicated his evenings to researching a pump idea that eventually led to the creation of the high-performance squirt gun that would later become a beloved summer toy for both kids and adults. Environmental friendliness was a key component of his invention, with water being the ultimate eco-friendly solution.
After a decade of dedication and hard work, Johnson’s idea came to fruition and the Super Soaker became one of the most successful toys in recent history.

Eventually becoming the bestselling water toy of all time, the Super Soaker squirt gun was rightfully inducted into the American National Toy Hall of Fame.
Reflecting on the business aspect of his invention, Johnson admitted that it was uncharted territory for him. He considered licensing the product after realizing the costs involved in commercializing it.
Despite initial setbacks, Johnson found partners who could provide the necessary expertise in marketing and other business functions, which ultimately propelled his idea to success.
Today, Johnson advocates for STEM education, encouraging individuals to pursue their passions in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“It’s just a matter of pursuing a passion and sticking with it,” he emphasized. “My magic word is to persevere, to never give up on your dreams.”
