President Joe Biden is anticipated to issue executive actions on immigration on Tuesday, as confirmed by a reliable source to Scripps News.
These actions, which have been long awaited and hinted at by the White House, would empower the president to prevent asylum-seekers from entering the country either in-between or at ports of entry once a certain threshold has been reached during times of increased encounters.
It is expected that this action will not affect those who are lawfully presenting themselves at ports of entry, like individuals with a scheduled asylum appointment through the CBP One app.
The administration plans to utilize the Immigration and Nationality Act’s section 212(f) to implement the border “shutdown,” the same method employed by former President Donald Trump to restrict cross-border migration and establish “travel bans” on majority-Muslim nations.
Officials from border towns have been invited to attend the event on Tuesday where President Biden will announce the measures. The mayors of Brownsville and Edinburg in Texas, as well as San Diego, California, are among those invited, according to local officials informed by Scripps News.
However, some local officials have criticized the event, arguing that more action is necessary to address illegal immigration.

“This is nothing but a sham and an insult to those of us dealing with the real consequences of his failed border policies. San Diego is the epicenter of illegal immigration. Yesterday alone, we faced over 1,300 encounters,” El Cajon, California, Mayor Bill Wells posted on X.
President Biden has been under pressure from both Republicans and Democrats to take action on the border. More than a dozen House Democrats sent a letter urging him to take executive action on the border. Republicans, on the other hand, continue to call for stricter measures.
The border issue has become a focal point in the 2024 election, particularly for Republicans. In a recent Economist/YouGov poll, a majority of respondents viewed immigration as an important issue, with more Republicans than Democrats considering it their top concern.
President Biden’s planned actions are likely to face legal challenges from immigration advocates, and their legal validity remains uncertain.
Already, some immigration advocates have expressed displeasure with President Biden as rumors of the executive actions circulate.
The border remains a crucial issue in the political landscape, with President Biden facing pressure from various groups and individuals to address the situation effectively.
