BOZEMAN — Owen Smith has faced challenges in the final lap of the steeplechase this year.
The Montana State junior struggled to secure a favorable position at the finish line. Despite these difficulties, Smith recalled a major victory in his racing career.
During the NCAA West First Round on May 24 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Smith overcame obstacles to qualify for nationals.
Teammate Rob McManus secured a spot as the second-place finisher in the first heat, while Levi Taylor led the third heat. Smith needed to pass two Utah State runners, Mark Crandall and Max Wehrli, on the final lap to become the third MSU steeplechaser to advance to the NCAA Track and Field Championships.

Smith recalled his coach Lyle Weese’s advice before the race: avoid kicking too early and focus on overcoming the final barrier.
On the last lap, Smith’s determination propelled him to a personal-best time of 8:49.21, securing a third-place finish and an automatic qualification for nationals.
