Libertarian presidential candidate Chase Oliver is presenting his case to become the next commander in chief.
Oliver sat down with Scripps News’ Rob Nelson on Tuesday to articulate why voters should select him over President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.
“You may have different characteristics or backgrounds than me,” Oliver remarked. “But if you’re leading a peaceful life without relying on government force, I’m on your side.”
The 38-year-old’s platform includes no new gun restrictions, the decriminalization of possession and use of all drugs, and establishing a simpler path to citizenship for immigrants already in the country.
Oliver acknowledges the differing views of President Biden and Trump on immigration but asserts that neither candidate has delivered a substantial solution.
“They view this as a political game,” he stated. “Both have enabled Congress to shirk their responsibilities in favor of excessive executive power.”
President Biden is expected to unveil executive actions on the border on Tuesday, allowing him to block asylum-seekers from entering the country if daily encounters reach a certain level.

Although Oliver has a slim chance of defeating his Democrat and Republican opponents in November, he told Scripps News that he sees “cracks” in the two-party system. When asked if he would vote for Biden or Trump if he weren’t on the ballot, he stated he would abstain.
“I wouldn’t cast a vote if only Donald Trump and Joe Biden were the options on my ballot because it’d be more worthwhile to contribute to my community or simply relax at home than vote for either of these men,” he expressed.
Openly gay Oliver believes there is a shift in the country, with younger voters aligning with Libertarians. He also believes the U.S. is prepared for a gay president.
“I think this country is prepared for that because we’ve evolved into a nation that is more inclusive of individuals being true to themselves, living peacefully,” he noted.
