Weight loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound remain in short supply.
The weekly semaglutide or tirzepatide injectables, used for diabetes and weight loss, are highly praised by patients for the significant impact they can have.
“I was hardly mobile, I wanted to sleep all the time, I wanted to eat all the time, I didn’t want to go anywhere, it just hurt to move. I’ve gotten a second chance at life, and I’m not going to mess it up,” shared Ozempic patient Jacque Long.
Some patients are struggling to find pharmacies that can fulfill their prescriptions or are going without. Due to the newness of these drugs, there is limited long-term research on the potential impacts. However, doctors caution that sudden stops or attempts to resume at higher doses after a break can lead to further difficulties.
Dr. Frank Chae advises patients to be slowly tapered off these medications to avoid risks of abrupt withdrawal.
“It’s not like you can stop your therapeutic dose, and then go back to it a week or two later. The dire consequences are increased side effects, GI upsets like nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, constipation that can actually increase if this is stopped abruptly,” Dr. Chae explained.

Blood sugar spikes and intense carb cravings can occur as well, and patients should restart with the smallest dose when resuming the medication.
Healthcare company Ro has introduced a public crowd-sourced shortage tracker to assist patients and reports shortages to the FDA.
Dr. Chae suggests that patients could explore off-label use of other medications, such as liraglutide injections like Trulicity, based on their existing health conditions.
Patients may also consider trying compounded semaglutide, although Dr. Chae advises caution as these drugs are not regulated by the FDA in terms of safety.
“The state of Mississippi, North Carolina and West Virginia have banned these compounded drugs,” he noted.
Ultimately, if there is a need to stop taking any of these medications suddenly, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider first.
