With only a day left before the polls close on Montana’s primary election, former President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Montana State Auditor Troy Downing for the Republican ticket in the eastern congressional district election.
“As Montana’s highly respected State Auditor, Troy is a Combat Veteran and successful entrepreneur who understands how to generate employment, safeguard our Military, and uphold Montana’s values in Congress,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social, his personal social media platform. “Troy will advocate for Lowering Inflation, Securing our Border, Championing American Energy Independence, and Defending our always under threat Second Amendment. Troy Downing has my Full and Complete Endorsement!”
Downing expressed gratitude on Monday for the endorsement from the former president, highlighting their alignment in finishing the border wall on the southern U.S. border.

“I anticipate collaborating with President Trump next year and leading the country back on course,” he stated in a phone interview. “He will have a supporter in Congress.”
Downing is a candidate in an eight-way primary for the position being vacated by Rep. Matt Rosendale. Two other Republicans with significant name recognition, Superintendent of Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen and longtime congressman Denny Rehberg, are also in the running. The top three candidates are all vying to convince voters that they are the most loyal to Trump, although Downing has faced criticism for past tweets criticizing the former president. Downing has responded with ads this cycle pledging to support Trump’s agenda if re-elected.
On Monday, Downing asserted, “Since Trump was our nominee from the start, I have consistently supported him.”
Former GOP legislator Joel Krautter is the only candidate in the primary who has stated opposition to Trump.
