While many of the state Senate and House seats were uncontested in Tuesday’s election, there were several in the Helena area that had some competition.
In Senate District 38, Republican Becky Beard of Elliston was in the lead Tuesday, according to early results, in a race that included fellow Republicans Jeremy Mygland of Townsend and Gregory Frazer of Deer Lodge.
According to early results of 2,814 votes, Beard had 42%, Frazer had 29% and Mygland had 27%.
The winner will go up against Democrat Jeffrey Benson of Boulder in the Nov. 5 general election.
In House District 77, GOP incumbent Jane Gillette of Three Forks was barely ahead in a race that featured Republican challenger Kyle McMurray, according to early results.
With 1,357 votes, Gillette had 51% of the vote, according to the secretary of state’s website.

The winner will face off against Democrat Jeremiah Dawson of Three Forks in the general election.
In House District 78, Republican Randyn Gregg of White Sulphur Springs had 52% and James Bergstrom of Buffalo had 48% of the early votes.
The winner will run against Democrat Glenn Lambert of Raynesford.
In the House District 79 race, Democrat Luke Muszkiewicz was ahead in the race between Anne Woodland and Emily Harris. All the candidates live in Helena. Muszkiewicz had 58% of the early vote, Harris had 36% and Woodland had 6%.
Republican Jill Sark was ahead with 69% of the early vote in a race that pitted her against Demetri Joslin of Helena, who had 31%.
In House District 82, Democrat Pete Elverum was ahead with 55% of the vote in the race that featured SK Rossi, who had 45%. Both are Helena residents.
The winner will face Republican John Looney Sr. of Helena.
In House District 83, Republican Wes Feist of East Helena was ahead in a contest with Christopher St. Jean. According to early results, Feist had 66% of the vote and St. Jean had 34%.
The winner will run against Jill Cohenour, D, of East Helena on Nov. 5.
In House District 84, Republican Julie Dooling was ahead with 77% of the votes in early results in a race against Jon Jackson of Helena who had 23%.
Democrat Michele Crepeau was ahead Tuesday with 82% of the early votes in a race against David Williams, who had 18%.
