Former state lawmaker and Public Service Commissioner John Driscoll is on track to secure the Democratic nomination for eastern Montana’s congressional district.
As per Decision Desk HQ, Driscoll was leading the four-candidate race at 10:07 p.m. Following behind Driscoll in unofficial results were Broadus rancher Steve Held, Ming Cabrera of Billings, and Kevin Hamm of Helena.
The district, which encompasses eastern and parts of central Montana, including Helena, Billings, and Great Falls, has an open seat after incumbent Republican Rep. Matt Rosendale opted not to run following a brief campaign for U.S. Senate.
A seasoned figure in Montana politics, 77-year-old Driscoll first won election to the Montana House of Representatives in 1972. He served three terms, including a period as speaker, before being elected to the Public Service Commission, where he served for 12 years.
Driscoll will go up against Republican Troy Downing, who was declared the winner of the Republican primary earlier in the evening by Decision Desk HQ.
