Warm weather has spurred rapid snow melt in the Beartooth Mountains leading to the closure of the Glacier Lake Road (Forest Road #2421), south of Red Lodge.
The route up Rock Creek Canyon and associated spur roads are closed to vehicles due to culvert washouts. The road closure begins at the Limber Pine Campground and continues to the end of the road.
Custer Gallatin Forest staff will be assessing the damage and working to re-open the road as soon as possible. The closure could remain in place until June 30 depending on the damage.
“Road conditions are also making access difficult for everyone, including first responders,” said Amy Haas, Beartooth District Ranger.
The notice comes on the heels of other nearby closures due to grizzly bear presence. Parkside Campground, Greenough Lake Campground, Greenough Lake, Limber Pine Campground, and Parkside Trail #103 have been closed through June 12, unless rescinded. Attempts to haze the bear have so far been unsuccessful.
