Lee Walburn finished seventh in the men’s decathlon at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. He set a new personal best with 7,816 points over the two-day event.
Walburn, a graduate of Whitefish, had previously won two NAIA decathlon championships at Carroll College before transferring to the Cougars.
He started the competition with personal bests in the 100 meters, shot put, and 400 meters, putting him in 11th place after the first five events.
Walburn continued to excel on the second day, achieving personal bests in the 110 hurdles and pole vault. He finished strong in the final 1,500 meters to secure seventh place and earn first-team All-America honors.
Leo Neugebauer of Texas won the decathlon with a collegiate record 8,961 points. Walburn had previously placed fifth at the 2023 Pac-12 championships.
In another decathlon earlier in the 2024 season, Walburn scored 7,694 points and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. This performance ranked him 11th in the country before the NCAA championships.
