Iowa’s Ava Jones is retiring from college basketball due to medical reasons. Two years ago, she was in a car accident that resulted in serious injuries for herself and the tragic loss of her father. The accident took place on July 5, 2022, in which Ava, her parents, and her brother were hit by a drunk driver while standing on a sidewalk in Nickerson, Kan. Her father, Trey, passed away from his injuries, her mother, Amy, sustained multiple severe injuries, and her brother suffered minor injuries. Ava was unable to play last season and never got the chance to suit up for the Hawkeyes. Despite committing to Iowa shortly before the accident, Ava has decided to medically retire from basketball. The new Iowa coach, Jan Jensen, fully supports Ava’s decision and she will continue to be on scholarship to complete her education. Ava expressed her gratitude for her time with the Iowa women’s basketball program and is looking forward to the next chapter of her life.
The accident occurred in Louisville, Ky., while the family was in town for an AAU tournament. The driver responsible for the accident, Michael Hurley, was indicted on multiple charges including murder, assault, and driving under the influence.
