A National Women’s Soccer League club is poised to break an attendance record for the most fans at a professional soccer game in the U.S.
Karen Leetzow, the president of the Chicago Red Stars, spoke to Scripps News from Wrigley Field in Chicago, where the record-breaking event is expected to take place. The team will face Bay FC in a match on Ion at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday night.

The venue is anticipating up to 40,000 fans to attend the game. This will be the first major women’s sporting event held at Wrigley Field since the Women’s Baseball League, the inspiration behind the film “A League of Their Own,” played a historic game there in 1943.
This surge of interest in women’s sports is evident, and the Chicago Red Stars aim to capitalize on the momentum. Leetzow has been advocating for city leaders and others to bring the team from the suburbs, where they currently share facilities for locker rooms and practices, into the city where they can establish a larger presence among sports fans.
