Howard University is severing ties with Sean “Diddy” Combs, revoking an honorary degree bestowed upon him and discontinuing a scholarship program named after him. This decision comes after a recently surfaced 2016 video that allegedly shows him assaulting R&B singer Cassie.
According to a statement from the university’s Board of Trustees, “Mr. Combs’ actions in the recently released video conflict so deeply with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is no longer considered deserving of the institution’s highest honor.”

The board unanimously voted to rescind the honorary degree awarded to Combs in 2014. The statement declared, “This revocation nullifies all privileges associated with the degree. Consequently, his name will be removed from all records listing honorary degree recipients of Howard University.”
Additionally, the board instructed university officials to sever financial connections with Combs, which includes refunding a $1 million donation, terminating the scholarship program, and dissolving a 2023 pledge agreement with the Sean Combs Foundation.
An inquiry for a comment was sent to a spokesperson for Combs by The Associated Press on Saturday.

Last month, Combs confessed to assaulting his former girlfriend Cassie in a hotel corridor in 2016 after CNN released footage of the incident. In a social media video statement, he expressed heartfelt regret, admitting his actions were “inexcusable.”
“I take full accountability for my behavior in that video. I was appalled then and I am appalled now,” Combs acknowledged.
A lawsuit filed by Cassie, also known as Cassandra Ventura, last year triggered a series of similar cases and public accusations against Combs. The lawsuit has since been resolved.
