Spain’s David Puig shot a 6-under 66 on Saturday to tie for the lead at the LIV Golf Houston event with Carlos Ortiz, Adrian Meronk, and Paul Casey heading into the final round. Jon Rahm, who had been in the lead, had to withdraw after playing six holes due to an infected foot, just days before the U.S. Open.
The extent of Rahm’s injury is still unknown. Puig, a 22-year-old Spaniard, is joined at the top by Ortiz, Meronk, and Casey, all at 10-under 134. None of them have won a LIV Golf title before. Meronk joined the league this year.
Ortiz, with one PGA Tour victory at the Houston Open, is one shot behind the leaders. Puig, a qualifier for the U.S. Open next week, is aiming for a spot representing Spain in the Olympics. However, LIV Golf events do not impact world rankings for the Olympics.
Casey, who also won the Houston Open on this course, acknowledged the challenge of the tough course and the competition. Meanwhile, Martin Kaymer, the last U.S. Open champion, finished three shots behind the leaders with a 72.
