The safety of your child while swimming can be affected by the color of their swimsuit, as noted by water safety experts who have examined how the color of swimwear can impact a child’s visibility underwater.
“The color of a child’s swimsuit has a significant impact on their visibility in the water, which is crucial for preventing drownings. Bright and contrasting colors are more easily spotted against the water, making it easier for lifeguards and parents to quickly locate a child, especially in emergency situations,” said Bernard Fisher, director of health and safety for the American Lifeguard Association.
“It is advisable to avoid swimsuits in light blue, gray, or green as they can blend with the water and the pool surroundings, making it challenging to spot a child. We recommend bright and contrasting colors such as neon yellow, orange, pink, and bright red,” Fisher added. “These colors are highly visible both underwater and on the surface.”

The significance of swimsuit colors in public safety is often overlooked, according to Wyatt Werneth, a coastal lifeguard in Florida and spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association.
Bright-colored clothes have been identified as a game-changer. If the colors of a swimsuit match the water or the environment, the child may blend in,” said Werneth while patrolling Cocoa Beach.
“This is also relevant for missing children. Bright colors can assist us in identifying them in a pool or at the beach. Lifeguards, in addition to other duties, focus heavily on locating missing children at the beach,” he explained. “Dressing them in bright colors, along with having pre-existing pictures of children, aids in our search efforts. Prevention of drowning and missing persons’ cases can be addressed by clothing color.”
