Summertime in Montana renews excitement and appreciation for our public lands. Unfortunately, lawmakers in D.C. prioritize protecting special interests over our clean air, water, and public lands.
Recently, the Bureau of Land Management has implemented new rules to modernize public land management and ensure the preservation of these valuable areas for future generations. The new Public Lands Rule and Oil and Gas Leasing Reform Rule are sensible updates that enhance the BLM’s role as the nation’s largest public land manager. These changes will facilitate the agency in acting as stewards of public lands in new ways that benefit everyone. The emphasis on incorporating land health into decision-making will encourage more collaboration between the BLM and lessees.
However, Montana Sen. Steve Daines introduced a resolution to overturn the Oil and Gas Leasing Rule, claiming that these reforms will harm small oil and gas producers. Yet, data from Enverus shows that most marginal wells are owned by large production companies, not small operators.
In central Montana, abandoned wells left behind by irresponsible speculators pose a significant environmental and financial burden on Montana taxpayers. The new bonding requirements in the rule aim to hold responsible parties accountable for cleaning up after drilling and extraction, a belief supported by over 90% of Montanans.
Sen. Daines’ attempt to reverse these important updates contradicts the interests of Montana taxpayers and demonstrates a lack of common sense. It is crucial for him to withdraw his misguided resolution that undermines the well-being of our public lands.
