Joey Chestnut, the biggest name in competitive eating history and a staple at the annual Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, expressed disappointment when he learned he was “banned” from this year’s event despite being a 16-time champion.

Joey Chestnut out of 4th of July hot dog eating contest due to vegan partnership

Although Major League Eating, in partnership with Nathan’s for the contest, did not explicitly ban Chestnut from participating, they expressed devastation upon learning that he chose to collaborate with rival hot dog brand Impossible Foods instead of competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest.
“For nearly two decades we have operated under the same hot dog exclusivity terms,” MLE stated in a release. “However, it appears that Joey and his management have prioritized a new partnership with a different hot dog brand over our longstanding relationship. … We hope he returns when not representing a competitor.”
In response, Chestnut took to social media to accuse MLE and Nathan’s of altering past sponsorship rules affecting his association with corporate sponsors.
Chestnut clarified, “This appears to be the reason for my exclusion, and it does not affect the July 4th event. Unfortunately, this is the decision made by Nathan’s and Major League Eating, depriving fans of the usual holiday enjoyment and entertainment. To my fans, I love you and thank you. Rest assured, you’ll see me eat again soon! STAY HUNGRY!”
Chestnut has dominated 17 of the last 18 Fourth of July hot dog eating contests hosted by Nathan’s and MLE. He clinched the title again last year by consuming 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes — 13 more than the nearest competitor.

In general, eating 62 hot dogs in one sitting, equivalent to nearly 18,000 calories, is not advisable. For perspective, Michael Phelps, a 28-time Olympic gold medalist, claims he consumed 8,000-10,000 calories daily during his swimming career peak.
However, for Chestnut, winning the competition holds more significance than most can digest. “I love competing in that event,” he stated. “I love celebrating America with my fans nationwide on the 4th, and I have been training to defend my title.”
