United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain and other officials within the union are currently being investigated for potential retaliation and embezzlement, as per a court-appointed watchdog’s recent statement.
Neil Barofsky was tasked with monitoring corruption within the union in 2021 following a bribery and embezzlement scandal involving the UAW. In May 2021, the union reached a settlement with the U.S. government, agreeing to be monitored for any misconduct by a designated watchdog.
In his report, Barofsky noted a decrease in the union’s cooperation with his monitoring efforts, specifically in relation to potential retaliation and embezzlement. The report raised concerns about delays in providing relevant documents that could be pertinent to the investigation.
“The Monitor’s assessment is that the Union’s delay of relevant documents is obstructing and interfering with his access to information needed for his investigative work,” stated the report.

In response to inquiries from The Associated Press, Fain stated that he welcomes the scrutiny. “Taking our union in a new direction means sometimes you have to rock the boat, and that upsets some people who want to keep the status quo,” the statement read. “We encourage the Monitor to investigate whatever claims are brought to their office, because we know what they’ll find: a UAW leadership committed to serving the membership, and running a democratic union.”
