Dozens of world leaders, including Vice President Kamala Harris, will gather in Switzerland this weekend for a summit on Peace in Ukraine — excludes Russia.
The summit demonstrates continued support for the country, with around 80 of the 160 invited delegations expected to participate.
The Swiss define the summit as a high-level conference to lay the groundwork for future discussions. While Zelenskyy has presented a 10-point peace plan, the summit will focus on nuclear security, food security, and the return of prisoners of war and abducted children.
Harris is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and emphasize the global implications of the conflict, as the U.S. seeks to show solidarity with Ukraine’s peace efforts.
“You can expect the vice president to emphasize that Ukraine’s struggle affects not just Ukraine. The consequences are global. This conflict’s outcome impacts the entire world. It involves longstanding international rules and norms. All nations are at risk if we allow an aggressor like Putin to flout these principles without consequences, as aggressive actors around the world could feel empowered,” said an anonymous administration official who briefed reporters ahead of the trip.

The summit precedes the NATO leaders’ summit in Washington next month, following significant U.S. engagements with Ukraine. President Biden and Zelenskyy met in France on the D-Day anniversary and in Italy at the G7 summit. At these events, allies pledged to assist Ukraine using frozen Russian assets, and the U.S. and Ukraine signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement. Harris is expected to reinforce the common theme of defending the international rules-based order.
