Shooting at splash pad in Detroit suburb leaves multiple wounded victims, authorities say

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Authorities in Michigan say multiple people have been wounded in a shooting at a splash pad in the Detroit suburb of Rochester Hills. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard tells reporters that “it sounds like we have nine, maybe 10 victims with gunshot wounds, victims of varying kinds of injuries.” Authorities say they believe they have a possible suspect contained in a home nearby. The sheriff says a handgun and three empty magazines were recovered. Authorities said Saturday that there was still an active crime scene and asked people to avoid the area.

Missouri woman’s murder conviction tossed after 43 years. Her lawyers say a police officer did it

A judge has overturned the conviction of a Missouri woman who was a psychiatric patient when she incriminated herself in a 1980 killing. Sandra Hemme has spent 43 years behind bars. Her attorneys argue the killing actually was committed by a now-discredited police officer. Judge Ryan Horsman ruled late Friday that Hemme had established evidence of actual innocence. Her attorneys says this is the longest time a women has been been incarcerated for a wrongful conviction. The judge said Hemme must be freed within 30 days unless prosecutors retry her. Prosecutors didn’t immediately respond to a phone message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Sao Paulo as protests sweep across Brazil in opposition to a bill that would further criminalize abortions. If passed, the law would equate the termination of a pregnancy after 22 weeks with homicide. The bill, proposed by conservative lawmakers and heading for a vote in the lower house, would also apply in cases of rape. Critics say those who seek an abortion so late are mostly child rape victims, as their pregnancies tend to be detected later. Haitian leaders oust police chief and appoint a new one as gang violence claims officers’ lives

A government official not authorized to speak to the media told The Associated Press on Saturday that Frantz Elbé was replaced by former Haitian police chief Normil Rameau. Rameau was dismissed from the post nearly four years ago under a different administration but will once again take the helm of an underfunded and ill-equipped department. More than 2,500 people have been killed or injured across Haiti in the first three months of the year as gang violence continues to surge. Among those killed are nearly two dozen police officers.
