CNN and Max are set to host a summer presidential debate featuring President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The debate will be broadcast live on CNN and will also be streamed on Max, marking a historic showdown between the two oldest presidential candidates.
CNN is already preparing to optimize the debate time effectively. Here’s what we know so far.
When Will Biden & Trump Debate Take Place?
The 2024 presidential debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates is scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 27 at 9/8c.
The debate will be held at CNN’s Atlanta studios without a live audience. This means there will be no real-time reactions from the crowd to Biden and Trump’s responses, and no direct questions from audience members. It’s possible that questions from voters may be submitted in advance for the moderators to ask on their behalf. Exact details about the moderators will be announced later.
How to Watch the Biden-Trump Presidential Debate
Viewers can watch the 2024 presidential debate on various platforms including CNN, Max, CNN International, CNN en Español, CNN Max, and CNN.com. The second debate will be hosted by ABC News on September 10.
2024 Presidential Debate Moderators
CNN has announced that the debate will be moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
Specifics for the Debate
CNN has established certain rules for the debate, such as muting both candidates’ microphones when it’s not their turn to speak (likely in response to the 2020 debate interruptions). There will be two commercial breaks during the debate, during which the candidates are not allowed to consult with their staff. They are only permitted to have a pen, paper, and water at their podiums. There will be no live audience present.
Rules for Qualification for the 2024 Presidential Debate
CNN has outlined the qualifications that Biden and Trump must meet to participate in the debate:
“To qualify for participation, candidates must fulfill the requirements stated in Article II, Section 1 of the US Constitution; file a Statement of Candidacy with the FEC; have their name on enough state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold before the eligibility deadline; agree to follow the debate rules; and achieve at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters meeting CNN’s reporting standards.”
CNN has specified the polling outlets whose data will be accepted for eligibility determination:
“Qualifying polls must be sponsored by CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Marquette University Law School, Monmouth University, NBC News, New York Times/Siena College, NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College, Quinnipiac University, Wall Street Journal, or Washington Post. The polling window for eligibility determination began on March 13, 2024, and ends seven days before the debate date.”
