Police in Aurora, Colorado, are on the lookout for the individuals who pretended to be delivery drivers and robbed a family at gunpoint in their residence.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m. According to the police, the suspects were wearing construction vests and claimed to be delivering a package.
The Rodriguez family is still trying to process the traumatic experience they went through a few days ago.
Angelo Medina Rodriguez had ordered a video game for his son on Amazon, so when he saw a man through his Ring Doorbell video claiming to have a delivery, he didn’t think much of it.
Rodriguez’s 6-year-old son, 12-year-old daughter, and their friend and caretaker, David Hernandez, were at home when the incident unfolded.
When they opened the door, three armed men forced their way in, demanding money.
“When [David] opened the door, they immediately pushed him and grabbed him by the neck,” Rodriguez said. “They grabbed my daughter and started choking her.”
Hernandez managed to escape through the back door and sought help from a neighbor.
“There was no need to hurt the kids,” Hernandez expressed. He has been finding it difficult to sleep since the incident.
Rodriguez mentioned that his children sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.
He highlighted the emotional toll it has taken on his wife and kids.
‘They didn’t have to hurt the kids’: Armed robbers pose as delivery drivers, invade Aurora home
“My wife doesn’t want to come out, doesn’t want to eat,” he shared. “My daughter won’t come out of her room.”
Rodriguez expressed his desire to relocate to a new home as they no longer feel safe in their current residence.
Aurora investigators suspect that the family was targeted because of a business being operated from their home. The thieves made off with personal belongings and cash from the business.
The Aurora Police Department advises the community to be cautious of unfamiliar individuals at their doors. Genuine delivery drivers typically wear identifiable uniforms, and you usually do not have to be present to receive a package.
It is recommended to explore alternative delivery options such as picking up mail from a P.O. box or selecting a “Hold for Pickup” choice.
If anything seems suspicious with your deliveries, contact the carrier and inform the local police department.
