Officials believe the shooting at the splash pad in Rochester Hills was a random act of violence.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard mentioned that the gunman arrived at the park around 5 p.m., approached the splash pad, and discharged more than 20 rounds before leaving.
Authorities were able to locate the suspect at a residence near the recreational park in Shelby Township.
SWAT teams tried to establish contact, but they found that the suspected shooter had taken his own life.
According to Bouchard, the 42-year-old suspected gunman had no prior criminal record and was residing with his mother, who was not present at the time.
A firearm was recovered at the shooting site, and at least one more weapon was discovered inside the residence.
“It’s a tragic situation … our thoughts are with the affected families,” expressed Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan K. Barnett.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated, “I am deeply saddened by the incident in Rochester Hills. We are monitoring the situation and staying in contact with local officials as updates come in.”
