PINEHURST, N.C. — Bryson DeChambeau secured his second U.S. Open victory on Sunday with a dramatic finish on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2, adding to the disappointment for Rory McIlroy.
In a thrilling final hour characterized by more mistakes than successes, DeChambeau concluded a week of intense competition by saving par from a bunker 55 yards away, sinking a 4-foot putt to finish with a 1-over 71.
“That’s Payne right there, baby!” DeChambeau exclaimed as he exited the 18th green.
In 1999, Payne Stewart famously made a 15-foot par putt on the final hole of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, defeating Phil Mickelson by one shot. DeChambeau credited seeing a mural of Stewart on the SMU campus as inspiring his decision to attend the university.
Seeking to end a 10-year major drought, McIlroy held a two-shot lead when he reached the 14th tee. Despite still having a one-shot lead, McIlroy faltered by missing a 30-inch par putt on the 16th hole. Ultimately, on the closing hole, he pitched to within 4 feet, only to miss the subsequent par putt. Read the full story here:
