Despite leading for three rounds of the U.S. Open, Bryson Dechambeau faced a comeback in the final round of golf’s third major in 2024. Rory McIlroy’s late bogeys gave Dechambeau the chance to win his second U.S. Open with a simple par on No. 18.
Easy, right?
Not quite.
Dechambeau, veering left off the fairway on his final tee shot, landed in a bunker on his second shot at the Par-4 hole. With McIlroy anxiously observing from nearby, Dechambeau executed an impressive bunker shot to place the ball just a few feet from the hole.
With a short par putt on No. 18, Dechambeau secured the win after shooting a 1-over 71 for the day and finishing 6-under par for the tournament. His performance narrowly edged out McIlroy, who finished at 5-under par after shooting 1-under on Sunday.

Late in Sunday’s round, McIlroy was 4-under for the day and 8-under for the tournament before faltering with bogeys on Nos. 15, 16, and 18. Dechambeau, on the other hand, parred the final three holes after McIlroy’s first bogey on No. 15.
This victory marked Dechambeau’s first major win since joining LIV Golf in 2022, leading to his expulsion from the PGA Tour. Nonetheless, he remains eligible to compete in major tournaments like the U.S. Open that are not under PGA Tour jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, McIlroy has been a vocal supporter of the PGA Tour and a critic of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour, citing its connections to the Saudi Arabian government.
