Monte, the University of Montana’s beloved bear mascot, has been chosen for induction into the Mascot Hall of Fame.
He will be officially inducted later this year, alongside professional mascots Jaxson de Ville (Jacksonville Jaguars), Lou Seal (San Francisco Giants) and Orbit (Houston Astros).
Monte (short for Montana) has been a familiar presence in the Montana community since his debut in 1993. His agility, energy, engaging personality, and unique entrances at football games have endeared him to Griz fans for over three decades.
Besides sporting events, the playful bear can often be seen at local schools, community events, and other gatherings in and around Missoula.
Monte, a two-time Capital One Mascot of the Year recipient, recently earned second place at The College Classic National Championship. Always portrayed by current University of Montana students, Monte has also inspired mascots at the professional level, including Mascot Hall of Famers Benny (Chicago Bulls) and Clutch (Houston Rockets).

“It’s not just the accolades that make Monte exceptional and deserving of this honor. It’s the deep connection he has with our fans and our state,” said Montana deputy athletics director Greg Sundberg.
“The Griz are more than just sports teams; they represent a way of life. And Monte is more than just a mascot; he’s a friend, a fellow fan, and, in many ways, he embodies the spirit of Montana.”
With this year’s inductees, the Mascot Hall of Fame now has 33 members. Monte is the 10th NCAA mascot and the only one from a current FCS institution. Other NCAA institutions with mascots in the Hall of Fame include Auburn, Delaware, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee, Western Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
Monte was nominated for the Class of 2024 alongside 18 other collegiate and professional mascots. The voting process included fan votes, input from Mascot Hall of Fame members, and the executive committee.
“The Mascot Hall of Fame is thrilled to induct Jaxson de Ville, Lou Seal, Monte, and Orbit into the Class of 2024,” said Joby Giacalone, chairman of the executive committee. “Each of these mascots has made significant contributions to their teams and communities, showcasing the joy and entertainment that mascots bring to sports. Their induction celebrates their legacy and enduring impact on fans.”
The Mascot Hall of Fame, established in 2014 with an interactive exhibit in Whiting, Indiana, was named the country’s top pop culture museum by USA Today in recent years.
Further details about Monte’s induction ceremony and special recognition at a Griz football game will be announced soon.
