New Mexico judge rejects request to compel new testimony from movie armorer in Alec Baldwin trial
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico judge says prosecutors can’t use immunity to compel a movie set armorer to testify in the involuntary manslaughter trial of actor Alec Baldwin who fatally shot a cinematographer during rehearsal for the Western movie “Rust.” At a Friday hearing, the judge rejected a request by prosecutors that would compel Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to testify with immunity in other court proceedings. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted in March of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins at a movie-set ranch. Baldwin’s attorneys also are urging the judge to scuttle the trial on allegations that the FBI destroyed evidence. He has pleaded not guilty.

ATLANTA (AP) — A trio of fishermen have saved almost 40 dogs that were close to drowning on a Mississippi lake. The hound dogs plunged into the water while chasing a deer after setting off on a fox hunt. As the frantic owners watched from shore, the fishermen sped over and started grabbing the dogs from the water. It took three trips to shore, but all the dogs survived. One of the fishermen says that “opportunities to help somebody are in front of us all the time.”

Members of the police department’s search and rescue team had discovered the object over the weekend near Gass Peak, part of the vast Desert National Wildlife Refuge where bighorn sheep and desert tortoises can be found roaming.

NEW YORK (AP) — A’ja Wilson leads Caitlin Clark by just over 1,000 votes in early fan voting for the WNBA All-Star Game. Clark’s Indiana teammate Aliyah Boston is third, about 40,000 votes behind the leaders. Wilson is having an incredible season, averaging 27.9 points and 11.3 rebounds. She has 217,773 votes. Clark is right behind with 216,427. New York’s Breanna Stewart is fourth and Dallas’ Arike Ogunbowale is fifth. Chicago’s Angel Reese is seventh in the voting and is the only other rookie in the top 10. The All-Star Game will be played on July 20 in Phoenix and will pit WNBA All-Stars against the U.S. Olympic team.

Donald Sutherland, the towering actor whose career spanned ‘M.A.S.H.’ to ‘Hunger Games,’ dies at 88
NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Sutherland has died at 88. Sutherland’s agents say he died in Miami on Thursday after a long illness. The Canadian actor’s career stretched from “M.A.S.H” to “JFK” to “The Hunger Games.” He was known for offbeat characters and epitomized the unpredictable, antiestablishment cinema of the 1970s. But over the decades, Sutherland shifted into a career as a respected character actor. He said he found more challenge in those roles. He never stopped working, ultimately appearing in nearly 200 films and series. He received an honorary Oscar in 2017.
Retired Azzurri star Roberto Baggio robbed at home during Italy’s loss to Spain
ROME (AP) — Retired Italy star Roberto Baggio was robbed at gunpoint at his home while watching the national team’s game against Spain at the European Championship. Italian media reports say at least five armed robbers burst into Baggio’s villa near the northern city of Vicenza at around 10 p.m on Thursday. One struck Baggio on the head with the butt of a gun when the former soccer player confronted them. The robbers locked Baggio and his family in a room while they stole jewelry, watches and cash. Italy lost to Spain 1-0.
Celebrations honor Willie Mays and Negro League players ahead of MLB game at Rickwood Field
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Fans came out to celebrate Willie Mays and other Negro Leaguers in several events and festivities around the historic Rickwood Field. Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, hosted its first Major League Baseball game between the Giants and St. Louis Cardinals. The game, which MLB called “A Tribute to the Negro Leagues,” was meant to honor the legacy of Mays and other Black baseball greats who left an enduring mark on the sport. The celebration started hours before the game and continued into the pregame ceremony.
