Age in presidential politics can be a significant factor for some Americans. An Ipsos poll revealed that 59% of Americans believe that both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are too old to serve another term, despite recent research showing that cognitive skills, crucial for leading a nation, can improve with age.
At 78, Trump would surpass Biden, who was elected at 77, as the oldest person to be elected President if he wins in November. On the other hand, if Biden secures reelection, he will be the first octogenarian to win a presidential election.
This issue of age has become a central concern for voters of all ages this election cycle. Some express reservations about the elder candidates’ abilities, while experts caution against overemphasizing age as a determining factor.
Neuroscientist Michael T. Ullman suggests that while younger individuals may excel in certain cognitive domains, older individuals can exhibit improved executive functions such as decision-making and focusing on key priorities. The age at which executive function declines, if at all, remains uncertain based on existing research.
According to Pew Research, the ideal age for a U.S. President, as perceived by respondents, is in the 50s, with the median age of U.S. presidents at inauguration being 55 years old.
Concerns about the age of presidential candidates may reflect broader societal issues of ageism. Sue Peschin of the Alliance for Aging Research highlights the importance of considering the valuable qualities older candidates can bring to leadership roles and urges a shift away from age-based prejudices.
Despite concerns about age, older leaders can offer unique perspectives and experience that benefit the nation. Peschin hopes that older candidates will address critical issues facing Americans and emphasize the importance of effective governance over age-related stereotypes.
