The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld a federal ban on domestic abusers owning guns, in an 8-1 decision. The court stated that individuals deemed to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of others can be temporarily disarmed, in accordance with the Second Amendment.
Kate Ranta, a survivor of domestic abuse, has been vocal about her experience and testified on Capitol Hill about domestic violence. Her story, along with many others, was included in briefs supporting the continuation of gun restrictions.
Ranta recounted how her ex-husband shot her and her father during a confrontation in front of her young son William. She emphasized the importance of raising awareness about domestic and gun violence in the aftermath of the incident.
Reflecting on the ruling, Ranta expressed a sense of relief, noting the significance of survivors and advocates standing up to prevent such cases from reaching the Supreme Court. She described the decision as a common-sense outcome that should not have been a cause for celebration.
