WASHINGTON D.C. – Montana Senator Steve Daines is planning to introduce a bill that would eliminate taxes on tips, a proposal first suggested by former President Donald Trump in a recent Las Vegas speech.
Several prominent Republicans expressed doubts about the idea, pointing to concerns about the national debt and fairness to workers who do not rely on tips for income, as reported by NBC news.
Senator Daines discussed the bill in a recent interview on Fox News, stating, “President Trump was inspired by a waitress who questioned why her tips were being taxed. As a member of the finance committee with jurisdiction over taxation, I will be introducing this bill in the United States Senate to remove federal taxes on tips.”
However, the committee’s research group has warned that exempting tips could have negative impacts on the federal budget, potentially reducing revenue by up to $250 billion over the next decade.
