Thirteen individuals sustained injuries following a mass shooting at a party in Alabama over the weekend.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in Montgomery, the state’s capital.
The Montgomery Police Department received a 911 call about the situation at approximately 1:48 a.m.
It took officers seven minutes to reach the scene from the time of the call. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered two gunshot victims with non-life-threatening injuries, who were then taken to a local hospital.
Montgomery police reported that an additional 11 people were injured and sought medical assistance in personal vehicles. Some individuals were struck by gunfire, while others sustained injuries amidst the chaos as individuals fled the scene.
A total of nine individuals were wounded by gunshots, three were hit by vehicles while fleeing, and one was injured by broken glass.
Authorities found over 350 shell casings at the location.
MPD’s acting chief of police, John Hall, stated that the party was unauthorized, taking place on private property and extending to other properties along the street.
During a press conference, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed condemned the incident as “infuriating” and a “senseless act.”
“These events cannot continue to happen. We will not stand for it. We will not be satisfied until we are doing everything at the local, state, and federal level to find those who are part of these continued incidents,” Mayor Reed declared.
Reed emphasized the importance of community members stepping forward with information, stating, “Next time you don’t know it if it’ll be you, or someone you love, or someone you know, that’ll be a victim of gun violence.”
Although police have not identified any suspects, the investigation is ongoing.
During a press conference, special agent Jennifer Conway with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms hinted that law enforcement may have leads on the responsible parties but will not cease until concrete evidence is obtained for conviction.
An investigation is still in progress.
