Duncan Hamilton participated in his second U.S. Olympic Trials men’s steeplechase final on Sunday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Hamilton, a native of Bozeman and a Montana State alum, finished sixth overall with a time of 8 minutes, 29.2 seconds, an improvement from his 14th-place finish in 2021.
Kenneth Rooks secured first place in the race with a time of 8:21.92, followed by Matthew Wilkinson in 8:23.0 and James Corrigan from BYU in 8:26.78 in third place. However, none of the top three finishers have met the Olympic qualifying standard of 8:15.0 for this season, so they await confirmation from World Athletics to finalize the field for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
During the initial slow start of the race, there were four different leaders until Rooks, who won the 2023 NCAA championship over Hamilton, took the lead and established a gap over the pack in the final two laps to secure the top spot.
