Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that the current phase of the conflict with Hamas in Gaza is coming to a close, paving the way for Israel to deploy more troops to its northern border to confront Hezbollah.
Netanyahu’s remarks have escalated tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as they seem to be edging closer to war. He indicated that the war against Hamas in Gaza is far from over and fewer troops will be required there, enabling forces to focus on Hezbollah.
In an interview with Israel’s Channel 14, Netanyahu mentioned the possibility of shifting some troops north, primarily for defense purposes and to allow displaced Israelis to return home. He also acknowledged the increased hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah since Hamas’ initial attack on October 7.
Efforts to ease tensions in the region were made by White House envoy Amos Hochstein, but the fighting persists. Netanyahu expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution but emphasized that Israel is prepared to take alternative measures if necessary.
Hezbollah has vowed to continue battling Israel until a ceasefire in Gaza is reached. Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, recently warned Israel against initiating a war, citing new weapons and intelligence capabilities.
While Netanyahu affirmed the winding down of the Gaza offensive, he stressed the necessity of ongoing operations to prevent Hamas from regrouping. Israel has faced criticism and legal challenges for its actions in Gaza, further straining relations with the U.S.
Despite calls for a ceasefire, Netanyahu emphasized that the war will not end until certain conditions are met, including the release of all hostages held by Hamas and the dismantling of their military and governing structures.
Discussions between Israeli and American officials are ongoing, with a focus on post-war plans for Gaza. Netanyahu outlined plans for Israeli military control over the territory while proposing a civilian administration with support from moderate Arab nations.
He dismissed the idea of resettling Israelis in Gaza and emphasized the need for a realistic approach. Netanyahu also addressed the issue of arms shipments from the U.S., claiming that they have been hindered, a point disputed by Washington.
