CORVALLIS — Powerlifting is known as one of the most intense and challenging sports, and in Corvallis, two women are shattering records and defying expectations in the world of powerlifting.
Holly Snyder, a dedicated teacher at Corvallis Primary School, has been actively involved in powerlifting for several years, in addition to leading the Barbell Club at Corvallis Athletics.
Snyder describes the club as a welcoming space for individuals interested in powerlifting to come together, create a community, and share their passion for the sport.
“Collaborating with others has been incredibly rewarding as we are able to provide feedback, learn from each other, and support one another during events,” Snyder explained.
One of Snyder’s collaborators is Kelly Simpson, who, like Snyder, has recently earned a spot in the United States Powerlifting World Competition in Las Vegas at the age of 64.
Simpson began her powerlifting journey in 2019 and has since achieved world records in her age group for deadlifting. Despite her age, Simpson shows no signs of slowing down.
“I have always been active and found a passion for lifting weights, especially through CrossFit. Discovering my strength in deadlifting, squatting, and bench pressing motivated me to push further and challenge myself,” Simpson shared.
While excelling in weightlifting, Simpson acknowledges that her training intensity may differ from others due to physical limitations.
“I may not do as many reps as others, but I still focus on lifting heavy to strengthen my muscles gradually and prevent injuries. With two replaced knees and a fused neck, I jokingly call myself almost bionic,” Simpson added.
Simpson and Snyder are gearing up to compete in the upcoming world competition in Las Vegas this November. Donations for their trip can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-corvallis-athletics-powerlifters?utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link
