Volkswagen has announced a recall for over 271,000 SUVs due to concerns that the passenger air bags may not inflate properly in the event of a crash.
The recall affects specific Atlas vehicles from the model years 2021 to 2024, as well as certain Atlas Cross Sport versions manufactured between 2020 and 2024.
In a document released by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, it was noted that faulty detectors might fail to accurately detect when a passenger is seated in the vehicle, leading to the deactivation of the air bag.
According to the NHTSA letter, Volkswagen dealers will replace the defective equipment at no cost, with notifications to affected owners expected to be sent out by mail no later than August 16, 2024.
Volkswagen has received around 1,730 warranty claims related to the airbag issue.

An earlier recall in 2023 involved an additional 143,000 Atlas and Atlas Sport models, some of which were made as early as 2018. These vehicles also faced issues with the faulty passenger detection system that could deactivate the passenger air bag.
