When Makenna Short was in high school, she had no idea what she wanted to do after graduation. Feeling lost and uncertain about her future, she knew she wanted to help people in some way but didn’t know how to make it happen.
That’s when she discovered Spark-Y, a nonprofit organization in Minneapolis that focuses on educating young people by engaging them in hands-on projects related to sustainability and entrepreneurship, both in school and beyond.
Through Spark-Y, Short found a way to fulfill her goal of making a difference in her community. Inspired by the organization’s approach to education, she felt empowered and motivated to continue her journey.
After high school, Short became an intern at Spark-Y and took on leadership roles in various projects, including the construction of a sustainable picnic pavilion. She pursued a degree in environmental studies and continued her work with Spark-Y, eventually becoming a senior council assistant in Edmonton, Alberta.
Despite her professional growth, Short remains connected to Spark-Y and now serves on its board of directors. The organization has not only helped her develop skills and confidence but has also shown her the impact one person can have on their community.
Spark-Y’s mission is to transform the lives of young people through projects like the aquaponics system at its Urban Agriculture Lab. By providing training, mentorship, and opportunities, Spark-Y empowers youth to pursue their dreams and create a better future for themselves.
The organization also focuses on diversity and equity, aiming to bridge racial and economic gaps and support youth in need. Through programs like Youth Pathways, Spark-Y helps juvenile offenders envision a positive future and guides them towards opportunities for growth and success.
With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning and community engagement, Spark-Y continues to inspire and uplift young people, encouraging them to explore their potential and make a difference in the world.
Spark-Y’s ongoing projects include rain gardens, roof gardens, STEM camps, and community partnerships that demonstrate a sustainable approach to public works and youth development.
