Lynn Whitfield was initially slated to appear in only three episodes of The Chi. What began as a guest star role eventually grew into a significant presence in the Showtime series, concluding its sixth season on Sunday, June 30 on the cable network.
The upcoming episode is described as, “Thanksgiving marks a time for reunions and revelations as families gather to celebrate. As jaw-dropping events unfold, loyalties will be tested, bonds will be broken, tears will be shed, and some lives will be forever changed.” In a video interview, Whitfield discusses her role as Alicia in The Chi and provides a preview of what to expect in the finale, emphasizing the theme of “tumultuous change.”
Portraying the fiercely independent Alicia, Whitfield likens her character to a mob boss. As the mother of Rob (Iman Shumpert), Alicia is assertive and proactive, especially in dealing with Douda (Curtiss Cook). The tension between the two characters may reach a boiling point in the Season 6 finale.
Describing the upcoming drama as a series of “shifts, hills and valleys, roller coaster rides, tumultuous change,” Whitfield hints at the uncertainty of Alicia’s future in the show. Despite the renewal of The Chi for a seventh season, she remains secretive about Alicia’s return.
Whitfield expresses her unexpected enjoyment of working with the younger generation of actors in the show’s six seasons. She values the diverse experiences and perspectives that each actor brings to the set, emphasizing the importance of creating an equal and collaborative environment for all actors.
Recognizing the show’s appeal in its portrayal of relatable characters and human experiences, Whitfield identifies the unique edge of her character, Alicia, as a glamorous gangster with a mysterious past. Exploring themes of retribution and revenge without conscience has been a stimulating creative opportunity for the star.
