BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Republican Gov. Doug Burgum is not widely known nationally but is currently being considered as a potential running mate for former President Donald Trump’ s vice presidential campaign.
The wealthy software entrepreneur has governed North Dakota with a focus on business-related initiatives such as income tax cuts and technological advancements for state operations, including cybersecurity and website upgrades. Despite not being vocal about social issues, he signed numerous anti-LGBTQ+ bills passed by the state legislature in 2023, around the same time he was considering a presidential bid for 2024.
Key points about Burgum and his leadership:
From humble beginnings to a successful executive
Burgum, 67, grew up in a small North Dakota town and later became a prominent figure in the software industry. After leading Great Plains Software, he continued his career in various roles, including real estate development and venture capital.
As governor, Burgum has emphasized economic matters over social issues, implementing policies geared towards tax cuts, cybersecurity improvements, regulatory reductions, and other reforms. Notable projects include the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and his advocacy for energy policies such as carbon capture.
Evolution of Burgum’s stance on LGBTQ+ issues
Burgum’s position on LGBTQ+ issues has evolved over time. While he vetoed bills related to transgender rights in the past, he signed several restrictive measures in 2023, including bans on gender-affirming treatments for children and transgender individuals in sports. He also approved a controversial book ban bill and revised North Dakota’s abortion laws following a Supreme Court decision.
Burgum’s recent bid for president in 2023 ultimately ended, leading him to announce that he would not seek a third term as governor.
