Reports from police sources indicate that a tragic incident occurred at a wedding ceremony in northeastern France, resulting in one fatality and five injuries due to the actions of masked gunmen.
It is believed that the violent encounter in the city of Thionville in the northeast region could be connected to a dispute between individuals involved in drug trafficking.
The shooting transpired at a reception venue during the night from Saturday to Sunday, with approximately one hundred attendees present.
Two individuals sustained serious injuries, with one being in critical condition.
Following the shooting, the perpetrators quickly fled the scene.
“The incident took place during a wedding celebration,” stated a source from law enforcement.Â
According to the source, “Around 1:15 am, a group of individuals stepped outside the venue to smoke, when three heavily armed individuals arrived and began firing in their direction.”
The gunmen arrived in a 4X4 vehicle, likely a BMW, as reported by the source.
It remains unclear where the vehicle originated from. Thionville is situated near the borders of Luxembourg and Germany.
Authorities suspect that the violent encounter was spurred by a dispute related to drug trafficking.
“The wedding wasn’t the target itself; it was the individuals present at the wedding,” the source added.Â
Evidence of the shooting was visible on Sunday morning, with a glass door riddled with bullet holes at the location.
In a neighboring town, Villerupt, a similar incident in May 2023 resulted in five injuries from shootings between rival gangs at a drug exchange site.
